Series 2, Programme 1: Queally’s of Fanore
By Paula Carroll | January 14, 2009
Still high as a kite after the session at Paddy Queally’s in Fanore! (Click here to download the MP3) I just love being able to spend the day in the company of musicians and singers in their own element, in their own place. And they call this work!! Delighted too with the pictures of the sessions that Matteo took. If you scroll really fast through them all, you get a sense of the whole evening in sequence. Try it!
Highlight of the evening? There were many - but near the top of the list has to be John Joe Scanlan! A voice as light as paper, a personality like a magnet. He’s like Fanore’s answer to Micho Russell. We went down to O’ Donoghue’s afterwards for more songs and music. And I recorded a great version of “The Boston Burglar” from John Joe . And Patsy Carrucan gave us a great rendition of a song in praise of John Joe – penned by William, A Dutchman settled in Fanore, and enamoured of all the songsters and raconteurs there .
Really enjoyed my pre-broadcast chat with Gabriel Casey about the older musicians of the region that he learned tunes from. These really were men from another time entirely. John and Paddy Killoughery, Miciln Conlon. Looking forward to visiting Gabriel in his workshop in Lisdoonvarna where he makes hand-crafted furniture, and talking to him in a bit more depth about those men. Will post up podcast and pictures so you can share that too.
Preparations underway now for Frank Custy’s session in Toonagh on Sunday 18th.
